Helping People Encounter Christ in His Church

Christian Catholic Media is a family-run Catholic lay apostolate in California.

We make free articles, prayers, and videos that explain the Catholic faith in plain words.

Our mission is simple: make the Catholic faith easy to understand, and help people encounter Christ in His Church.

Why "Christian Catholic"?

Because Catholics are Christians.

Some people are surprised to hear that. But it is not a new idea.

Around A.D. 375, a bishop in Spain named St. Pacian of Barcelona was asked why he called himself "Catholic." He answered:

"Christian is my name, but Catholic my surname." St. Pacian of Barcelona, Letter to Sympronian, c. A.D. 375

Your first name says who you are.

Your surname says which family you belong to.

That is exactly what we mean.

We are Christians, followers of Jesus Christ.

And we belong to the family He founded: the Catholic Church.

The word itself is old. Around A.D. 107, on his way to martyrdom in Rome, St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote to the Christians of Smyrna:

"Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church." St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans 8, c. A.D. 107

It is the earliest written use of the phrase "the Catholic Church" that we still have.

Catholic means universal: one Church, for everyone, everywhere.

Christian is our name. Catholic is our family.

We are an independent lay apostolate, not an official ministry of the Church or any diocese.
