The Beheading of St. John the Baptist
Feast Day: August 29

“I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John.” – Luke 7:28
The Feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist honors the courageous witness of the great prophet who prepared the way for Christ. Celebrated on August 29, this feast day reminds us of the cost of truth, courage, and faithfulness to God’s law.
The Voice Crying in the Wilderness
John the Baptist was chosen by God before his birth, set apart to proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Living a life of simplicity and holiness, he preached repentance and baptized in the Jordan River, preparing hearts for Jesus Christ. John’s fearless preaching called sinners to conversion, including King Herod, whom he reproved for his unlawful marriage.
A Martyr for the Truth
Herodias, the wife of Herod, harbored a grudge against John for condemning their union. During Herod’s birthday banquet, her daughter Salome performed a dance that pleased him greatly. In a rash vow, Herod promised her anything she desired. At her mother’s prompting, she requested the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
Though distressed, Herod ordered John’s execution rather than lose face before his guests. John was beheaded in prison, becoming a martyr who gave his life for truth and righteousness.
The Forerunner of Christ
John’s death foreshadowed the suffering of Christ, whom he had proclaimed as the Lamb of God. In life and death, John pointed to Jesus, declaring, “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30). His humility, courage, and fidelity to God’s commandments make him a model for all Christians.
A Feast of Reflection and Courage
The Church observes this feast as a solemn reminder of the cost of discipleship. St. John’s martyrdom challenges us to stand firm in our faith, speak the truth with love, and live with integrity, no matter the cost.
John the Baptist holds a special place in salvation history as the bridge between the Old and New Testaments. He is honored as the last and greatest prophet, the friend of the Bridegroom, and a fearless herald of the Gospel.
A Lasting Witness
The Beheading of St. John the Baptist is one of the few saints’ feast days that commemorates not their birth into this world, but their birth into eternal life through martyrdom. His witness continues to inspire courage in proclaiming the truth of Christ.
St. John the Baptist, pray for us!
