Sts. Timothy and Titus

Sts. Timothy and Titus

Feast Day: January 26

“Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient.” – 2 Timothy 4:2

Sts. Timothy and Titus, close companions and disciples of St. Paul the Apostle, are honored for their missionary zeal, pastoral leadership, and dedication to spreading and strengthening the early Church. Their shared feast day on January 26 celebrates their faithful service as bishops, teachers, and spiritual sons of Paul.

St. Timothy – A Faithful Son in the Faith

Timothy was born to a Jewish mother and a Greek father in Lystra, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). Raised in the faith by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, Timothy embraced Christianity when he met Paul on his missionary journeys.

Timothy became one of Paul’s most trusted collaborators, accompanying him on many journeys and serving as his representative to troubled communities. Paul’s deep affection for Timothy is reflected in his letters, calling him “my beloved and faithful child in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 4:17).

Paul entrusted Timothy with the care of the Church in Ephesus, where Timothy served as bishop. Tradition holds that Timothy suffered martyrdom around 97 A.D., defending the faith until the end.

St. Titus – A Bridge Builder and Shepherd

Titus, a Gentile convert, was also a close companion of St. Paul. Known for his diplomatic skill and gentle yet firm leadership, Titus was frequently sent on difficult missions to resolve conflicts within the early Christian communities.

Paul entrusted him with the care of the Church in Crete, appointing him as bishop there. In his Letter to Titus, Paul offers guidance on forming strong leaders, teaching sound doctrine, and living holy lives.

Titus faithfully shepherded the Church in Crete and continued spreading the Gospel, eventually dying peacefully after a life of tireless service.

A Legacy of Mission and Pastoral Care

Together, Timothy and Titus represent the second generation of Church leadership—bishops formed directly by the apostles. Their work ensured that the teachings of Christ and the mission of the Church continued with clarity, unity, and fervor.

Paul’s Pastoral Epistles—1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus— offer not only personal guidance but also enduring principles for the leadership and structure of the Church.
