St. Peter Claver - September 9

“We must speak to them with our hands before we try to speak to them with our lips.” – St. Peter Claver

St. Peter Claver is remembered as a heroic missionary who dedicated his life to serving and ministering to enslaved Africans brought to the Americas. His feast day, celebrated on September 9, honors his deep compassion, tireless service, and unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human being.

A Life Dedicated to Christ’s Poor

Peter Claver was born in 1580 in Catalonia, Spain. As a young man, he felt called to religious life and joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). During his studies, he was deeply influenced by the example of a fellow Jesuit, Alfonso de Sandoval, who ministered to enslaved people in the Spanish colonies.

Moved by this witness, Peter volunteered to serve as a missionary in the New World. He was sent to Cartagena, Colombia, one of the largest slave ports in the Americas, where thousands of enslaved Africans arrived in horrific conditions.

A Missionary to the Enslaved

Upon his ordination in 1616, Peter Claver dedicated himself entirely to the care of enslaved Africans, calling himself “the slave of the slaves forever.” Every time a slave ship arrived in Cartagena, he boarded it immediately, bringing food, medicine, and comfort to the terrified and suffering people packed into the holds.

He spent his days ministering to the physical and spiritual needs of the enslaved—feeding them, tending to their wounds, baptizing them, and teaching them about the love of God. Over his lifetime, he personally baptized more than 300,000 people and tirelessly advocated for their dignity.

A Witness of Compassion and Mercy

St. Peter Claver’s work was not limited to newly arrived ships. He visited plantations and homes where enslaved people were forced to work, offering them comfort, catechesis, and the sacraments. He also confronted slave owners and colonists about their cruelty and sin, often facing opposition for speaking out on behalf of the oppressed.

Despite suffering from illness in his later years, Peter continued his ministry until his death in 1654.

A Saint for Justice and Mercy

Peter Claver was canonized in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII and later declared the patron saint of missions to Africa and of ministry to enslaved people and human rights causes. His life stands as a powerful witness to the dignity of every person, regardless of race, status, or condition.

A Model of Radical Love

St. Peter Claver’s life reminds all Christians of the call to love the poor, the marginalized, and the suffering with radical compassion. His example continues to inspire those who fight for justice and serve the most vulnerable in society.

St. Peter Claver, pray for us!
