St. Paulinus of Nola - June 22

“He alone loves the Creator perfectly who manifests a pure love for his neighbor.” —St. Paulinus of Nola

St. Paulinus of Nola was a Roman senator-turned-bishop, poet, and ascetic whose life reflected a dramatic journey from wealth and prestige to humility and holiness. He is remembered for his deep charity, refined literary talent, and unwavering devotion to Christ and the Church.

From Senator to Servant of God

Paulinus was born around 354 AD in Bordeaux, France, to a wealthy Roman family. He received an exceptional education under the famous poet Ausonius and soon rose to political prominence, serving as a Roman senator and governor in Campania.

Though respected and admired, Paulinus began to feel the emptiness of worldly success. The loss of his infant son and the influence of devout Christians, including St. Ambrose and St. Martin of Tours, led to a profound conversion. He and his wife, Therasia, gave away their fortune to the poor and chose a life of prayer and simplicity.

A Bishop and Builder of Charity

After settling in Nola, near Naples, Paulinus was ordained a priest and eventually became bishop of the city. He was beloved for his gentleness, compassion, and dedication to his people. He restored churches, cared for pilgrims, and supported the poor and suffering with fatherly love.

Though he lived in monastic simplicity, Paulinus used his background as a statesman and writer to promote peace and unity in the Church. He carried on warm correspondence with many great saints of his time, including St. Augustine and St. Jerome.

Poet and Hymnographer

Paulinus was a gifted poet and hymn writer. His writings reflect both theological depth and artistic beauty. He is one of the earliest Latin Christian poets whose works celebrate the mystery of Christ, the communion of saints, and the joy of Christian hope.

His poems often honored St. Felix of Nola, whose shrine became a center of pilgrimage under Paulinus’ care.

Legacy and Inspiration

St. Paulinus of Nola is a model of Christian conversion, charity, and intellect. He shows that holiness is possible even for those once immersed in power and privilege. His life speaks of sacrifice joyfully embraced for love of Christ, and his writings continue to inspire those who seek beauty in truth.
