St. Lawrence - August 10

“The poor are the true treasures of the Church.” – St. Lawrence

Deacon and Martyr of Charity

St. Lawrence is honored as one of the most beloved deacons and martyrs of the early Church, remembered for his joy, courage, and love for the poor even in the face of death. His feast day, celebrated on August 10, commemorates his witness to Christ through both service and martyrdom.

A Faithful Servant of the Church

Lawrence served as one of the seven deacons of the Church in Rome under Pope Sixtus II in the 3rd century. As a deacon, his duties included caring for the poor, distributing alms, and assisting in the liturgy. He was deeply loved for his kindness, humility, and dedication to the needs of others.

Guardian of the Church’s Treasures

During a persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Valerian, Pope Sixtus II was arrested and executed. As the last surviving leader of the Roman Church, Lawrence was ordered to turn over the treasures of the Church to the authorities.

In response, Lawrence gathered the poor, the sick, the widows, and the orphans, presented them to the Roman prefect, and declared, “These are the treasures of the Church.”

A Joyful Martyr

Angered by Lawrence’s bold response, the authorities sentenced him to a particularly cruel death. Lawrence was martyred by being roasted alive on a gridiron. Even in his suffering, he maintained his joy and sense of humor, famously saying to his executioners, “Turn me over; I’m done on this side.”

His heroic witness inspired many conversions and strengthened the faith of the early Christian community.

Patron of Deacons and the Poor

St. Lawrence is the patron saint of deacons, the poor, cooks, and firefighters, reflecting his life of service, charity, and courageous witness. His example continues to inspire those who serve in the Church and those who care for the needy.

A Witness to Joy, Charity, and Courage

St. Lawrence’s life reminds the faithful that true treasure is found not in wealth, but in love for Christ and in serving others. His joyful courage in the face of death continues to inspire Christians to live with faith, charity, and fearless trust in God.

St. Lawrence, pray for us!
