St. Jerome - September 30

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” – St. Jerome

St. Jerome is honored as one of the greatest biblical scholars in the history of the Church, remembered for his devotion to Scripture, his sharp intellect, and his tireless work in translating the Bible. His feast day, celebrated on September 30, commemorates his lifelong dedication to making God’s Word accessible to the faithful.

A Scholar with a Fiery Zeal for Truth

Jerome was born around 347 A.D. in Stridon, a town on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia (modern-day Croatia or Slovenia). A brilliant student, he traveled to Rome to study rhetoric and classical literature, excelling in his studies but also falling into the temptations of worldly success.

His life changed dramatically when he experienced a deep conversion, realizing that true wisdom is found not in earthly knowledge but in the knowledge of God.

Devoted to Scripture and Holiness

After his conversion, Jerome embraced a life of asceticism, prayer, and scholarship. He traveled widely, spending time in the deserts of Syria as a hermit before returning to Rome, where he became secretary to Pope Damasus I. At the pope’s request, Jerome undertook his most famous work: translating the Bible from its original languages into Latin.

This translation, known as the Vulgate, became the official Bible of the Western Church for over a thousand years and remains a foundational text in the Church’s tradition.

A Life of Study, Teaching, and Writing

Jerome eventually settled in Bethlehem, where he established a monastery and devoted the rest of his life to study, writing, and teaching. He wrote biblical commentaries, theological treatises, and letters addressing various issues of the Church and spiritual life.

Though known for his sharp tongue and fiery temperament, Jerome’s writings reflect both profound intellect and deep love for God’s Word.

Doctor of the Church and Patron of Scripture Scholars

St. Jerome died in 420 A.D., leaving behind a legacy of immense contributions to biblical scholarship and Catholic theology. He was declared a Doctor of the Church, recognized for his role in shaping the Church’s understanding and love of Scripture.

He is the patron saint of Scripture scholars, translators, librarians, and students, a model for those who seek truth in God’s Word.

A Witness to the Power of God’s Word

St. Jerome’s life is a powerful reminder that Sacred Scripture is essential to the Christian life. His famous teaching, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ,” continues to challenge and inspire Catholics to study, pray with, and live by the Word of God.

St. Jerome, pray for us!
