St. James the Greater
Feast Day: July 25
“Can you drink the cup that I drink?” – Mark 10:38
Apostle, Martyr, and Pilgrim Saint
St. James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles, is honored for his close friendship with Jesus, his bold witness to the Gospel, and his ultimate martyrdom. His feast day, celebrated on July 25, commemorates his life of faith, courage, and missionary zeal.
One of the Sons of Thunder
James was the son of Zebedee and brother of John the Apostle. Together with John and Peter, James was part of Jesus’s inner circle, present at key moments such as the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’s daughter, and the Agony in the Garden.
Jesus gave James and John the nickname “Boanerges,” meaning “Sons of Thunder,” likely reflecting their boldness and fiery zeal.
Missionary Zeal and Martyrdom
After Christ’s Ascension, tradition holds that James traveled to Spain to spread the Gospel. Though his missionary efforts there were met with limited success at the time, he planted seeds of faith that would flourish in later generations.
James returned to Jerusalem, where he became the first apostle to be martyred, executed by the sword under the order of King Herod Agrippa I around 44 A.D., as recorded in Acts 12:2.
Santiago and the Pilgrimage of Faith
After his martyrdom, tradition holds that James’s remains were miraculously transported back to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, which became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. The famous Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) continues to inspire pilgrims today, symbolizing a spiritual journey toward Christ.
Patron of Pilgrims and Spain
St. James is the patron saint of Spain, pilgrims, and laborers. His life and the enduring tradition of pilgrimage remind the faithful of the Christian journey of faith, repentance, and discipleship.
A Witness to Courage and Discipleship
St. James the Greater’s life reminds the faithful that following Christ means taking up the cross, drinking the cup of suffering, and proclaiming the Gospel with boldness. His friendship with Jesus, his witness to the Resurrection, and his martyrdom continue to inspire courage and perseverance in faith.
St. James the Greater, pray for us!
