St. Henry - July 13

“He who serves the temporal needs of others serves Christ Himself.” – St. Henry

A Holy Emperor and Servant of Christ

St. Henry, also known as Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor, is honored for his leadership, his commitment to justice, and his deep personal holiness. His feast day, celebrated on July 13, commemorates his role as a Christian ruler who governed with humility, charity, and a strong sense of responsibility to God.

A King Formed by Faith

Henry was born in 972 A.D. in Bavaria, Germany, into a noble and devout family. Raised with strong Christian values, he was educated by the Church and deeply influenced by the Benedictine monks, whose discipline and devotion shaped his worldview.

In 1002, Henry became King of Germany, and later was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014.

Defender of the Church and Peace

As emperor, Henry saw his role not just as a political leader but as a servant of Christ. He worked tirelessly to promote peace, justice, and the welfare of the Church. He founded and supported numerous monasteries and dioceses, strengthened ecclesiastical discipline, and defended the Church’s freedom from political interference.

He often mediated disputes, seeking to bring unity and peace among rival factions.

A Life of Humility and Charity

Despite his power, Henry lived a life of personal humility, practicing fasting, prayer, and acts of charity. He and his wife, St. Cunegunda, lived a holy marriage, reportedly embracing chastity by mutual consent and focusing their lives on service to the Church and the poor.

Henry gave generously to build churches and monasteries and made frequent pilgrimages, always placing God’s will above his own ambitions.

Patron of the Childless and the Holy Roman Empire

St. Henry is the patron saint of kings, rulers, childless couples, and the Holy Roman Empire, offering an example of how leadership can be lived as a path to sanctity when guided by faith and humility.

A Witness to Holiness in Leadership

St. Henry’s life reminds the faithful that worldly power and holiness are not opposed when used in service to God and others. His legacy continues to inspire leaders to govern with justice, compassion, and devotion to Christ.

St. Henry, pray for us!
