St. Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Cyril of Jerusalem

Feast Day: March 18

“The Church is called Catholic because it extends over all the world, teaches universally and completely one and all the doctrines that ought to come to man's knowledge.” – St. Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, bishop and Doctor of the Church, is honored for his clear teaching, strong defense of the faith, and pastoral care of new Christians. His feast day, celebrated on March 18, commemorates his role in shaping early Christian instruction and guiding believers through turbulent times.

A Teacher of the Faithful

Cyril was born around 315 A.D. near Jerusalem. He was ordained a priest and later became Bishop of Jerusalem around 349 A.D. His time as bishop was marked by both great pastoral care and theological challenges, especially during the Arian controversy, which denied the divinity of Christ.

One of Cyril’s most lasting contributions was his development of catechetical instruction for those preparing for baptism.

The Catechetical Lectures

Cyril is best known for his “Catechetical Lectures,” a series of sermons given to catechumens and newly baptized Christians. These teachings offered a clear and beautiful explanation of the Creed, the Sacraments, Christian moral living, and the Eucharist.

His lectures provide one of the earliest and most detailed accounts of how the Church prepared adults for Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, giving us a precious glimpse into the liturgical life of the early Church.

A Defender of Christ’s Divinity

Cyril’s tenure as bishop was not without struggle. During the Arian crisis, Cyril was exiled from Jerusalem multiple times because of conflicts with Arian-supporting emperors and local authorities. Despite these hardships, he remained faithful to the Nicene Creed, defending the full divinity of Jesus Christ.

His perseverance and witness helped preserve orthodox teaching during one of the most critical theological battles of the early Church.

Doctor of the Church and Patron of Catechists

St. Cyril of Jerusalem died in 386 A.D., after decades of faithful service to Christ and His Church. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1883 by Pope Leo XIII, recognized for his contributions to Catholic theology and catechesis.

He is especially honored as a patron of catechists and those preparing for the Sacraments.

A Witness to Truth and Pastoral Love

St. Cyril of Jerusalem’s life reminds the faithful that teaching the faith with clarity, patience, and love is one of the most important works in the Church. His example calls all Christians to grow in knowledge and love of the truths handed down from the apostles.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, pray for us!
