St. Bernardine of Siena
Feast Day: May 20
“The name of Jesus is the glory of preachers, because the shining splendor of that name causes His word to be proclaimed and heard.” – St. Bernardine of Siena
A Preacher of the Holy Name
St. Bernardine of Siena, priest and missionary preacher, is honored for his passionate preaching, devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and his efforts to renew faith and morality in society. His feast day, celebrated on May 20, commemorates his fiery missionary spirit and his deep love for Christ.
A Childhood Marked by Suffering and Holiness
Bernardine was born in 1380 in Siena, Italy, and was orphaned at a young age. Raised by devout relatives, he grew into a young man of great virtue and deep prayer.
During a plague outbreak in Siena, Bernardine spent months nursing the sick and caring for the dying, demonstrating his profound compassion and courage.
A Franciscan Preacher on Fire for Christ
At the age of 22, Bernardine entered the Franciscan Order, embracing a life of poverty, humility, and preaching.
Though his voice was initially weak, he prayed for the strength to preach—and God answered. Bernardine became one of the greatest preachers of the 15th century, traveling on foot throughout Italy, calling people to repentance, conversion, and devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.
He often held massive outdoor gatherings, as churches could not hold the crowds that came to hear him.
Spreading the Holy Name of Jesus
Bernardine is especially known for promoting devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. He would hold up a banner inscribed with the IHS monogram, the abbreviation for “Jesus”, urging people to turn to Christ in love and trust.
His preaching helped heal divisions in communities, reduce crime, reform public life, and strengthen the Church during a time of corruption and spiritual decline.
Teacher, Reformer, and Peacemaker
In addition to preaching, Bernardine was a reformer of the Franciscan Order, encouraging a stricter observance of poverty and community life. He also served as a peacemaker, resolving conflicts between warring cities and families.
Despite being offered high positions in the Church, including the bishopric three times, he humbly declined, choosing to remain a simple preacher.
Patron of Advertisers and Public Relations
St. Bernardine is the patron saint of advertisers, public relations workers, and communications, due to his skill in using images and words to communicate the Gospel clearly and powerfully.
A Witness to the Power of the Name of Jesus
St. Bernardine of Siena’s life reminds the faithful that the name of Jesus has power to heal, unite, and convert hearts. His fearless preaching and love for Christ continue to inspire evangelists, missionaries, and all who seek to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed.
