St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Feast Day: August 20

“What we love we shall grow to resemble.” – St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Doctor of the Church and Apostle of the Virgin Mary
St. Bernard of Clairvaux is honored as a Cistercian monk, abbot, mystic, preacher, and Doctor of the Church, known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, his defense of the faith, and his tireless efforts to reform the Church. His feast day, celebrated on August 20, commemorates his life of contemplation, powerful preaching, and unwavering love for God.
A Noble Youth Drawn to the Monastic Life
Bernard was born in 1090 near Dijon, France, into a noble family. Intelligent, charismatic, and devout from a young age, he chose to reject worldly success in favor of total dedication to God.
In 1113, he entered the new Cistercian monastery at Cîteaux, bringing with him more than 30 relatives and friends, drawn by his passion for Christ and the monastic life.
Founder and Abbot of Clairvaux
Soon after entering, Bernard was sent to found a new monastery, Clairvaux Abbey, which became a center of spiritual renewal and reform. As abbot, Bernard combined a life of deep prayer and austerity with dynamic leadership, attracting many vocations and inspiring the wider Church.
Preacher, Reformer, and Peacemaker
Bernard’s influence extended far beyond his monastery. He was called upon to resolve disputes among bishops, popes, and kings, and played a crucial role in defending the Church against heresies of his time, particularly the errors of Peter Abelard.
He was also instrumental in preaching the Second Crusade, although the outcome deeply saddened him. His guidance was sought across Europe for matters of both spiritual and political importance.
Devotion to Mary and the Name of Jesus
St. Bernard had an intense love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, often called her “Star of the Sea” (Stella Maris), a title still used in Marian devotion today. He composed beautiful prayers and sermons about her, helping deepen Marian devotion throughout the Church.
He also fostered devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, understanding the power and sweetness of invoking the Lord with love and reverence.
Doctor of the Church and Patron of Beekeepers
Bernard was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830, recognized for his deep theological writings and spiritual insights. He is the patron saint of beekeepers, candlemakers, and Gibraltar, reflecting his reputation for “honey-sweet” preaching that nourished souls.
A Witness to Love, Contemplation, and Zeal for Souls
St. Bernard’s life reminds the faithful that the love of God transforms the heart and compels the soul to both contemplation and action. His balance of prayer, study, and passionate service continues to inspire religious communities, scholars, and all who seek holiness.
