St. Bridget of Sweden
Feast Day: July 23
“Lord, show me the way and make me willing to follow it.” – St. Bridget of Sweden
Mystic, Mother, and Messenger of God
St. Bridget of Sweden is honored as a mystic, visionary, wife, mother, and founder of a religious order. Her feast day, celebrated on July 23, commemorates her life of deep prayer, love for the Church, and courageous witness to the truth.
A Noblewoman Called to Holiness
Bridget was born in 1303 in Sweden, into a noble and devout family. From a young age, she experienced visions of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, which shaped her deep spirituality.
At age 13, she married Ulf Gudmarsson, a nobleman, and together they had eight children, one of whom became St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget and Ulf shared a devout life, making pilgrimages and performing works of charity.
A Widow Turned Mystic and Founder
After Ulf’s death, Bridget devoted herself entirely to prayer, penance, and service to the Church. She received numerous revelations from Christ, particularly focused on the Passion of Jesus, the needs of the Church, and calls for repentance and reform.
She founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior, commonly known as the Bridgettines, a community for both men and women dedicated to prayer and service.
A Voice of Reform and Courage
Bridget was not afraid to speak the truth to powerful leaders, including popes, kings, and rulers, urging them to live virtuous lives and work for peace and justice. She was a strong advocate for the return of the papacy to Rome during its exile in Avignon.
Her writings, particularly her “Revelations”, became widely read throughout Europe, offering both spiritual guidance and prophetic insight.
A Life of Pilgrimage and Prayer
Bridget made numerous pilgrimages, including to Santiago de Compostela, the Holy Land, and Rome, where she spent her final years advocating for Church reform and caring for the poor. She died in 1373 in Rome, with her relics later transferred to Sweden.
Patron of Europe and Widows
St. Bridget is a patron saint of Europe, Sweden, widows, and those suffering from the loss of children, offering a powerful example of how holiness can be lived in every state of life—married, widowed, and religious.
A Witness to Courage, Contemplation, and Action
St. Bridget of Sweden’s life reminds the faithful that deep prayer leads to courageous action. Her love for Christ, her dedication to the Church, and her compassionate heart continue to inspire those who seek to combine mystical union with Christ and active service to others.
