Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Feast Day: July 16

“Whoever dies clothed in this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” – Promise of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Queen and Beauty of Carmel
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is honored as the patroness of the Carmelite Order and a powerful intercessor for all who seek her protection and guidance. Her feast day, celebrated on July 16, commemorates Mary’s special care for the Carmelite family and all who entrust themselves to her.
The Carmelite Tradition
The devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel began with the Carmelite hermits who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the 12th century. These early Carmelites looked to the Blessed Virgin Mary as their model of prayer, contemplation, and humility, honoring her as their Mother and Queen.
Mount Carmel itself is a place rich in biblical history, associated with the prophet Elijah, who defended the true faith there (1 Kings 18).
The Gift of the Brown Scapular
On July 16, 1251, tradition holds that Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, an English Carmelite, giving him the Brown Scapular as a sign of her special protection. She promised, “Whoever dies clothed in this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”
The scapular became a symbol of Mary’s maternal care, calling the faithful to a life of prayer, purity, and devotion to Christ. It is not a magical charm but a sign of belonging to Mary, who leads her children closer to Jesus.
A Mother for All Who Seek Her
Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s patronage extends far beyond the Carmelite Order. For centuries, she has been invoked by the faithful for protection, guidance, and help in times of danger, both spiritual and physical.
Her image is beloved around the world, often depicted holding the Infant Jesus and the Brown Scapular, extending her hands in mercy to those who call upon her.
Patroness of the Carmelites and Protector of Souls
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patroness of the Carmelite Order, and also a protector of sailors, the souls in purgatory, and all those devoted to her scapular. She reminds the faithful of the importance of prayer, penance, and living in union with Christ.
A Witness to Mary’s Maternal Love and Protection
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel reminds the faithful that Mary is a mother who watches over her children with tender care, leading them always to her Son, Jesus. Her promise to those who wear the scapular is a call to live a life of faith, humility, and love, under her mantle of protection.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!
