Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - September 8

“The birth of the Mother of God is the dawn of our salvation.” – Traditional Catholic Antiphon

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8, honors the birth of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This joyful feast reminds the faithful that God prepared Mary from her very beginning to be the Mother of the Savior, and through her birth, the plan of salvation draws near.

A Joyful Beginning in the Story of Salvation

The Church has celebrated the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary since at least the sixth century. While the Bible does not record the details of her birth, tradition tells us that Mary was born to Saints Joachim and Anne, a devout Jewish couple who had prayed for many years to have a child.

Mary’s birth is a sign of hope, as she was chosen from all eternity to be the Mother of the Messiah. Her nativity marks the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people.

Chosen and Prepared by God

Mary was uniquely prepared by God for her role in salvation history. From the first moment of her conception, she was preserved from original sin—a privilege known as the Immaculate Conception. Her birth brings joy not only to her parents but to the whole world, for through her, the Savior will come.

The Church honors Mary’s birth because it is closely connected to the coming of Christ. As the dawn precedes the sunrise, so the nativity of Mary heralds the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

A Feast Rooted in Hope and Joy

The Nativity of Mary is a feast of joy, reflecting the goodness of God in preparing the perfect mother for His Son. It is a day to celebrate Mary’s role in the mystery of salvation and to thank God for the gift of her life.

This feast invites the faithful to reflect on God’s providence and the importance of saying “yes” to His will, as Mary did throughout her life.

A Mother for the Whole Church

Mary’s birth is not only a blessing for her family but for the entire Church. As the Mother of Jesus, she is also the spiritual Mother of all the faithful. Her nativity is a sign that God’s plan is unfolding, and that His mercy extends to every generation.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
