Totus Tuus
Saint Louis-Marie Grignon de Montfort (1673-1716)
I am all yours, and all that is mine is yours, O Virgin, blessed above all.
Totus Tuus: A Prayer of Complete Surrender to Mary and Christ
“Totus Tuus” is a Latin phrase meaning “Totally Yours.” It became widely known as the personal motto of Pope St. John Paul II, who took the words from a longer traditional prayer of consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The full prayer begins:
“Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt.”
“I am all yours, and all that I have is yours.”
This prayer reflects the heart of Marian consecration—a total offering of oneself to Jesus through Mary. It is deeply rooted in the spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort, who taught that the surest, easiest, and most perfect way to follow Christ is by entrusting everything to His Mother.
By saying Totus Tuus, the believer entrusts their whole self—body, soul, possessions, and even spiritual merits—into Mary’s hands, confident that she will use all of it to lead them closer to Christ.
Pope St. John Paul II lived this motto deeply, entrusting his entire life, papacy, and sufferings to Mary. For him, Totus Tuus was not just a phrase, but a lifelong prayer of surrender, trust, and love.
