Tota Pulchra Es
You are all beautiful, Mary, and there is no original stain in you.
Tota Pulchra Es: A Hymn to Mary’s Purity
Tota Pulchra Es is a beautiful and ancient Catholic prayer dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its title, in Latin, means “You are all beautiful”, and the prayer praises Mary’s purity and sinlessness, particularly in light of her Immaculate Conception.
The full opening line reads:
"Tota pulchra es, Maria, et macula originalis non est in te."
“You are all beautiful, Mary, and the stain of original sin is not in you.”
This line reflects the Catholic belief that Mary was conceived without original sin, a teaching officially defined as dogma in 1854 but believed and honored by Christians for centuries. The words of the prayer are drawn largely from Sacred Scripture, especially the Song of Songs and other Old Testament imagery that has been interpreted by the Church as pointing to Mary’s holiness.
Tota Pulchra Es has also inspired many musical settings throughout the centuries, from simple Gregorian chant to choral works by composers like Duruflé, Bruckner, and others. It is especially sung or recited on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) and during other Marian celebrations.
More than just a poetic hymn, Tota Pulchra Es is a prayerful expression of love, honor, and theological truth—reminding us that Mary, as the new Eve, was created full of grace to be the pure vessel of Christ our Savior.
