Sub Tuum Praesidium: We Fly to Thy Protection
We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
The Oldest Version
The Sub Tuum is the oldest known prayer to the Virgin Mary. It was found written in Greek on an Egyptian papyrus from around the third century. A translation of the Greek:
O Mother of God, we take refuge in your loving care. Let not our plea to you pass unheeded in the trials that beset us, but deliver us from danger, for you alone are truly pure, you alone are truly blessed.
