“Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints”
O Holy St. Anthony gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request).
O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms. The gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen.

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
]]>St. Jude, one of the original twelve apostles, is the patron saint of hope and lost causes. While you may have heard his name associated with hospitals, for many people lost causes come in the shape of financial difficulty.
Here, we’ll talk more about St. Jude, as well as a special St Jude Prayer for Financial Help or to those who are dealing with financial hardship.
St. Jude
St. Jude was one of the twelve apostles, though little is known about him. He is scarcely mentioned in the New Testament and, while his epistle has survived, it is not included in the canonical Bible that most of us are familiar with.
The epistle does explain at least part of how St. Jude became the patron saint of hopeless causes, as the larger part of the epistle is dedicated to the early Christians, encouraging them to persevere writing,
“You, my dear friends, must use your most holy faith as your foundation and build on that, praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves within the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to give you eternal life. When there are some who have doubts, reassure them; when there are some to be saved from the fire, pull them out.”
St. Jude’s association with difficulty in general may explain how he came to be associated with financial hardship in particular. He’s also generally shown with a round-embossed image of Christ, which does look rather like a large coin.
The St. Jude Prayer for Financial Help
However St. Jude became associated with financial distress, there’s a special prayer, passed down by tradition, that those in dire straits are encouraged to pray.
The prayer begins with a specific prayer of intercession to St. Jude. This is then followed by the Apostle’s Creed, three Our Fathers and three Hail Marys. This sequence of prayers is then said for three consecutive days.
When and How to Pray
When Jesus gave us the “Our Father,” he did so as a template for how we ought to pray (Mat. Ch. 6; Lk. Ch. 11). The line “give us this day our daily bread” is encouraged us to pray to the Lord for what we need – not for everything our hearts desire.
Similarly, the St. Jude prayer for financial help should be reserved for serious situations, like when you are struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table – not for when you want a new car or an upgraded cell phone.
The concepts of prayer through saints and having patron saints that we can turn to in times of need is one of the most beautiful and meaningful parts of the Catholic faith, but it is tragically trivialized by people treating prayer to the saints like wishes to fairies.
Not only does this distort the meaning of these beautiful traditions, it also sets one up for disappointment. Prayer has a way of giving us what the Lord knows we need – not what we think we need.
A Tool of Hope
St. Jude is famously the patron saint of lost causes. This doesn’t make him a figure of despair – it makes him a figure of hope. Similarly, his prayer is one that we can turn to when it seems that we can’t make ends meet on our own.
]]>If you say other common Novenas like the Rosary or the Chaplet of Devine Mercy, you may know that the prayers can be said alone but that they are commonly said in a group. The Novena to St. Jude is the same way. When we provide the texts to the prayers in the article below, the text for the “leader” is standard text and text for the response is bolded.
Contextual information not part of the prayer is included in italic.
The First Prayer
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone.
Intercede with God for me that He bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly -
At this point in the prayer, a specific intention of the individual or group is added. Then, the prayer continues.
- and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.
Amen
The Second Prayer
May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, and loved in all the tabernacles until the end of time. Amen.
May the most Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised and glorified now and forever. Amen.
St. Jude pray for us and hear our prayers. Amen.
Blessed be the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Blessed be the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Blessed be St. Jude Thaddeus, in all the world and for all Eternity.
Dear Apostle and Martyr for Christ, you left us an Epistle in the New Testament. With good reason many invoke you when illness is at a desperate stage. We now recommend to your kindness
(Here, the name of a sick person or hospital patient)
who is in a critical condition. May the cure of this patient increase his/her faith and love for the Lord of Life, for the glory of our merciful God. Amen.
Final Prayers
After these less familiar prayers, the novena is concluded with one Our Father:
Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
and one Hail Mary:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the lord is with thee. Blessed art though amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners – now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Why not say a prayer?
Saying a nine-day prayer can sound intimidating. However, the Novena to St. Jude is much shorter than other novenas. While some of the prayers may be new to you, most of them are probably familiar, making it a good prayer to add to your tool belt.
]]>As a prayer form, there a number of ways in which you can really make this prayer your own. Here, we’ll explore the St. Jude Novena by talking about novenas in general and doing a deep dive on St. Jude.
The Novena
The Novena is a prayer or sequence of prayers said over the course of nine days. If from nowhere else, the name might sound familiar to you because we mentioned it in our article on reasons to pray the rosary.
Novenas are popular for a number of reasons. For one, remember to say your prayers for nine consecutive days can help to keep your mind on the sacred while navigating your day. There’s also a sense that novenas are more “powerful” than other prayers because of the amount of time and dedication that they require.
St. Jude
So now that we understand Novenas, why St. Jude?
St. Jude – not to be confused with Judas Iscariot - was one of the twelve apostles. As such, he was present at Pentecost, which is intimately connected with the tradition of the novena.
Further, St. Jude is the patron saint of hope and lost causes. Because many people choose the novena when they’re going through a tough time, St. Jude is a natural choice.
Further, some people may feel a particular closeness to St. Jude if they are named after him, or if they choose him as their saint during confirmation.
Novena to St. Jude
If you’re a non-Catholic or a new-Catholic reader, a novena to St Jude can sound strange enough let alone a novena to a saint. So, why say a prayer to a saint and how does that work?
Catholics believe in a concept called “The Communion of Saints” this is intimate spiritual contact with passed Catholics. This is the foundation for not exactly praying “to” saints but praying “through” saints by asking them to intercede to God on their behalf. So, for Catholics, a novena to St. Jude is asking St. Jude to pray for you just like you might ask a family member or close friend to pray for you.
Saying the Novena
If you’ve said novenas in the past, they probably involved the Rosary or the Chaplet of Devine Mercy. The Novena to St. Jude is a bit different.
For one thing, it involves only three distinct prayers. Further, each of those prayers is said only one time each night compared to the dozens of repetitions involved in the standard Rosary or Chaplet. That doesn’t mean that it’s totally different.
Like the Rosary and Chaplet, the Novena to St. Jude is meant to be said alone or in a group. Most templates for the prayer – including that linked above – have a standard text to be recited by the prayer “leader” as well as a bolded general response.
The prayer to St. Jude may be unfamiliar to some, but after saying it every day for nine days, it can grow in a person pretty quickly.
Why Not Say a Prayer?
Now that you know more about novenas and about St. Jude, and have a guide to say the Novena to St. Jude, hopefully, you will be inspired to try adding this prayer to your repertoire.
]]>You perseveringly pursued your wayward son
Not with threats but with prayerful cries to heaven.
Intercede for all mothers in our day
So that they may learn to draw their children to God.
Teach them how to remain close to their children,
Even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray.
Dear St Monica, troubled wife and mother,
many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime.
Yet, you never despaired or lost faith.
With confidence, persistence, and profound faith,
you prayed daily for the conversion
of your beloved husband, Patricius,
and your beloved son, Augustine;
your prayers were answered.
Grant me that same fortitude, patience,
and trust in the Lord.
Intercede for me, dear St Monica,
that God may favorably hear my plea.
(mention your intention here)
Grant me the grace to accept His Will in all things,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
]]>My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always, though I may seem to be lost in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. (Thoughts in Solitude)
]]>O God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray and to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, but with you there is light. I am lonely, but you do not leave me. I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help. I am restless, but with you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience. I do not understand your ways, but you know the way for me... Restore me to liberty, and enable me so to live now that I may answer before you and before me. Lord, whatever this day may bring, your name be praised. (Composed in a Nazi prison while awaiting his execution.)
]]>Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do. I thank you; I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures. I wish no more than this, a Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands, without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.
]]>Our Father who art in heaven, you completely fill heaven and earth with the immensity of your being; you are present everywhere; you are in the saints by your glory, in the damned by your justice, in the good by your grace, even in sinners by your patience, tolerating them. Grant that we may always remember that we come from you and that we may live as your true children. Grant that we may set our true course according to your will and never swerve from you. Grant that we may use our every power, our hearts and souls and strength to tend toward you, and you alone.
]]>Memorial, October 19
"Jesus, my Lord and Savior, what can I give you in return for all the favors you have first conferred on me? I will take from your hand the cup of your sufferings and call on your name. I vow before your eternal Father and the Holy Spirit, before your most holy Mother and her most chaste spouse, before the angels, apostles and martyrs, before my blessed fathers Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis Xavier–in truth, I vow to you, Jesus my Savior, that as far as I have the strength, I will never fail to accept the grace of martyrdom, if someday you in your infinite mercy should offer it to me, your most unworthy servant...My beloved Jesus, here and now I offer my body and blood and life. May I die only for you, if you will grant me this grace, since you willingly died for me. Let me so live that you may grant me the gift of such a happy death. In this way, my God and Savior, I will take from your hand the cup of your sufferings and call on your name: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!"
Father, you consecrated the first beginnings of the faith in North America by the preaching and martyrdom of Saints John and Isaac and their companions. By the help of their prayers may the Christian faith continue to grow throughout the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
]]>Eternal Lord of all things, I feel your gaze on me. I sense that your Mother stands near, watching and that with you are all the great beings of heaven: angels and powers and martyrs and saints. Lord Jesus, I think you have put a desire in me. If you will help me, please, I would like to make my offering. I want it to be my desire and my choice, provided that you want it, too, to live my life as you lived yours. I know that you lived an insignificant person in a little, despised town. I know that you rarely tasted luxury and never privilege, and that you resolutely refused to accept power.
I know that you suffered rejection by leaders, abandonment by friends, and failure. I know. I can hardly bear the thought of it all. But it seems a toweringly wonderful thing that you might call me to follow you and stand with you. I will labor to bring God's reign if you will give me the gift to do it.
